It is not uncommon for students to put up ‘complicated’ as their relationship status on Facebook, in fact it is becoming somewhat of a trend amongst the youth in India and the Northeast. It is understandable because as teenagers, you are still figuring out your likes and dislikes, your wants and aspirations, trying to find the right balance between studies, family and social life and so it is but obvious that you will feel conflicted about relationships in general. However, it is a bad sign when this complication threatens to affect your studies and other aspects of your life so you need a way to un-complicate things. We put together a list of ways that can help you do just that –
Don’t feel pressurized to be in a relationship. Never let your friends force you into being in a relationship just because it’s the ‘in’ thing to do. Many students suffer because they feel like they are obligated to be in a relationship just because all of their friends are in relationships. This should not be the case, do what your heart tells you to do.
It is a bad idea to be in a relationship just because you want someone to praise and compliment you. While you may enjoy the ego boost for a while, someone may get hurt in the long run. Be in a relationship only if you genuinely care for one another.
Don’t be overly serious about the relationship, take things slow and wait till you are an adult to make long-term decisions. If things are meant to work out, they will. You should never rush things, because you may feel differently about him/her in another couple of years. Instead learn from one another, do activities together and make memories that you will cherish for a long time to come.
If you are dating someone, be honest with him/her. You should never hide things about yourself because that can lead to arguments and fights. You cannot expect to bond over false pretences. Let him/her see you for who you truly are.
You are a free individual so learn to say ‘no’ when you don’t want to do something. Don’t let your boyfriend or girlfriend make you do things that you don’t want to do, remember that you have a say too and you should stand by your decision. You should never forget your ideals because that makes you who you are.
Never try to control the other person, everyone is free to do as he/she pleases. You should also not try to change him/her for your benefit. It is okay to compromise but it is not okay for you to try and mould the other person into someone he/she is not.
Date someone who makes you want to be a better person, someone who brings out your hidden skills and talents. You should never mix with people who try and make you do mean or evil things that can hurt the people around you.
Never let it get the better of you. It is okay to date but it is never a great idea for you to put your relationship ahead of your studies. Right now, your first priority should be your classes because if you bring in good grades, you can pursue the career of your dreams and work towards living a successful and fulfilling life. You will always have time to put focus on your relationships later in life.
One thing that you need to remember in a relationship is to respect each other. Give them freedom to be who they are and listen to what they have to say without judging them. In a relationship, you should support one another, so that both of you can reach your potential.
Rather than being loveydovey like you see in the movies, become good friends who care for one another. Talk to one another, share your problems, hang out together, this will strengthen your bond and you will have some to lean on when you are going through tough times.
