Elon Reeve Musk is the founder, CEO, and lead designer of SpaceX but that is not all, he is also the co-founder, CEO, and product architect of Tesla, Inc.; as well as the co-founder and CEO of Neuralink. Believe it or not, the South African-born American business magnate, investor and engineer, ranked 21st on the Forbes list of The World’s Most Powerful People in 2016. And what more, as of February 2018, he is listed by Forbes as the 53rd-richest person in the world with a net worth of $20.8 billion.
THE STARTING NOTE
He was born in Pretoria, South Africa. From an early age, he showed signs of increased intellect, as compared to his peers. In fact, he taught himself computer programming when he was only 12 years old. At the age of 17, he moved to Canada to attend Queen’s University. Two years later, he transferred to the University of Pennsylvania where he received an economics degree from the Wharton School and a degree in physics from the College of Arts and Sciences. He has also planned on getting a Ph.D. in applied physics and material sciences at Stanford University but dropped out to put his entrepreneurial streak into action.
BEFORE SPACEX AND TESLA
He co-founded a web software company by the name of Zip2, which was acquired by Compaq for $340 million in 1999.
He also founded an online payment company called X.com, which merged with Confinity in 2000 and became PayPal, which was bought by eBay for $1.5 billion in October 2002.
Musk founded SpaceX in 2002. SpaceX is a private American aerospace manufacturer and space transportation services company. It was founded with the goal of reducing space transportation costs and enabling the colonization of Mars. Some of its achievements include developing the Falcon launch vehicle family and the Dragon spacecraft family, both currently deliver payloads into Earth orbit.
He co-founded Tesla, Inc. in 2003. Based in Palo Alto, California, Tesla, Inc. specializes in electric vehicles, energy storage and solar panel manufacturing. The company’s Model S was the world’s best-selling plug-in electric car in 2015 and 2016.
Musk also inspired the creation of SolarCity, a solar energy services company that is now a subsidiary of Tesla. In 2015, he co-founded OpenAI, a non-profit research company that aims to promote friendly artificial intelligence. He co-founded Neuralink in 2016, which is a neurotechnology company focused on developing brain–computer interfaces. He is also the founder of The Boring Company, which deals in infrastructure and tunnel-construction.
SPACEX LAUNCHES COMMERCIAL COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITE
SpaceX successfully launched a satellite using a pre-flown rocket yet again. A two-stage Falcon 9 rocket topped with the SES-12 commercial communications satellite lifted off from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on June 4. This was the second mission for the launcher’s first stage, which also helped loft the US Air Force’s robotic X-37B space plane last September. These activities are part of SpaceX’s effort to develop fully and rapidly reusable rockets and spacecraft.
