Do Your Research
Find out what you want to learn before you start your internship so that you can ask your mentor to guide you accordingly. This helps in a lot of ways, for example, if you want to learn a specialized skill then your mentor can assign you work that will coincide with that. If you are not specific then you may learn a lot of skills during the internship but they may not come in use later when you pursue a job of your choice.
When you start your internship, it is normal to feel overwhelmed. Most students feel that way but you need to learn to be vocal and communicate with the mentor who has been assigned to guide you. If you are not being assigned enough assignments or are being assigned projects where you are learning nothing of value then you need to ask for assignments that will help you learn and grow during the period of your internship.
Observe the Surrounding
Although in the case of most assignments, you are assigned only one mentor, you should keep your eyes and ears open so that you can learn from other employees as well. They may seem small at first but even small things like sending an official mail or ideating during team meetings can help you in the long run. If you are alert, you will also get a better understanding of the responsibilities that each member bears and what they bring to the table.
Break Out of Your Comfort Zone
When you are interning, it is the best time to push yourself and see what you are capable of. You should consciously take up assignments that force you to step out of your comfort zone and do something that you have never done before. The reason why this is the best period to try your hand at different skills is that you have a safety net of experienced professionals looking out for you, and also, your mentor will be more forgiving even if you fall short. Remind yourself that it is okay to fail because you can learn from your mistakes.
Learn People Skills
One of the biggest challenges in a real-world work environment is gelling with other employees. This is why you should use your internship phase to improve your people skills so that when you are hired after you finish your course, you can make friends easily and also work effectively as a team. Introduce yourself to people and try to help out whenever possible. If you are well-liked then team members will go out of their way to ensure that your internship is pleasant and memorable.
The best thing about interning in a reputed company is meeting experienced individuals who may help you professionally later in life. You should be courteous and friendly so that they are willing to connect with you through social media, and that can work to your advantage even after you finish your internship.
